The Farmleigh Fellowship announces major initiative at Global Irish Economic Forum

8th October 2011

The Farmleigh Fellowship, an initiative stemming from the Global Irish Economic Forum in 2009, today announced details of a major programme which, over the next five years, aims to equip 1,000 young Irish professionals with the business, culture and communication skills needed to successfully trade in Asia.

Working in partnership with Irish companies, universities and the Irish Government, The Farmleigh Fellowship commenced its first programme in January 2011. The MBS Asian Business Programme involved 23 Irish graduates and 19 Irish companies. Participants spent three months in Ireland and nine months in Asia developing a specific business project for their sponsoring company.

Speaking at today’s announcement at the Global Irish Economic Forum in Dublin Castle, Fred Combe, Chairman and Co-founder of the Farmleigh Fellowship, said: “This is a Masters programme awarded by UCC in cooperation with Nanyang Business School in Singapore and is specifically developed to support the Farmleigh Fellowship concept. Equipping our third-level graduates with the necessary business knowledge to enter foreign markets will help drive Ireland’s economy. Asia offers extensive business opportunities and the MBS has proved to be a success in its pilot year. We have identified growth opportunities for the Farmleigh Fellowship and, by 2016, we estimate over 1,000 graduates will have passed through the various programmes on offer.”

In order to qualify for The Farmleigh Fellowship programme, graduates must have at least a 2.2 honours degree or equivalent. Additional programmes will be introduced by The Farmleigh Fellowship before 2016. These include:

•    Asian Work Placements
•    Undergraduate Exchanges between Irish and Asian Universities
•    Asian Language Immersion, particularly in China
•    Government Agency Placements within Asia

Also speaking at The Farmleigh Fellowship announcement today, Gerry Creaner, Co-founder of the Farmleigh Fellowship  said: “The 2011 programme has been an outstanding success. Our participants have been sponsored by large successful companies such as, Abbot Laboratories, CRH, Diageo, Glanbia, Morgan McKinley, Pfizer, PM Group, Smurfit Kappa and Treasury Holdings. We have participants based in Beijing, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Malaysia and Dubai. Four of their nine months in Asia are spent at Nanyang Business School where they are shown the best current practices for doing business in the region. The benefits participants are exposed to during this programme are second to none.”

The Farmleigh Fellowship is supported by leading business professionals such as Denis O'Brien, Liam Casey and Terry Clune.
